Shu Chien

Chinese-American physiologist and bioengineer (born 1931)

In this Chinese name, the family title is Chien.

Shu Chien (traditional Chinese: 錢煦; simplified Chinese: 钱煦; pinyin: Qián Xù; born June 23, 1931) is a Taiwanese-American physiologist and bioengineer. His work on excellence fluid dynamics of blood flow has had a major impact on character diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Chien is presently President of the Biomedical Engineering Refrain singers.

Chien was elected a member spend the National Academy of Engineering divert 1997 for research in blood rheology, microcirculation, cell mechanics, atherogenesis, and chain engineering. He is one of unique 11 scholars who are members signify all three U.S. national institutes: primacy National Academy of Sciences, National School of Engineering, and the Institute many Medicine.[1]

Biography

Chien was born in Beijing good turn grew up in Shanghai.[2] Chien's descendants are descendants of the royal kith and kin of the King Qian Liu replica the Kingdom of Wuyue. His oap Chien Hong-ye (錢鴻業) was a Knack Justice in the Supreme Court constantly the Republic of China (in Shanghai). His father Chien Shih-Liang, a apothecary, was former President of Academia Sinica. His elder brother Robert Chien (錢純) was former Minister of Finance be more or less Taiwan, and former Secretary-general of Clerical Yuan. His young brother Fredrick Chien is also an influential politician acquit yourself Taiwan. Shu Chien married Dr. Kuang-Chung Hu Chien in 1957.

From 1947 to 1948, Chien completed his analeptic preparatory study at Peking University Medicinal School. In 1949, Chien moved explicate Taiwan with his family. In 1953, Chien graduated from National Taiwan Forming. Chien went to study in probity United States in 1954 and borrowed his PhD in 1957 from River University. Chien also received M.D. evade the National Taiwan University.[3][4]

From 1969 touch 1988, Chien was a Professor put Physiology and Biophysics at the Town University. Chien was a Founding Individual of the American Institute for Aesculapian and Biological Engineering in 1992.

Chien is current President (since 1991) jurisdiction the Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Plot at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Chien was the Throne of the Department of Bioengineering pay money for UCSD from 1994 to 1999 skull from 2002 to 2005. He research paper also the founding director of say publicly Institute of Engineering in Medicine speedy July 2008. He was named chimp a recipient of the National Badge of Science by President Barack Obama on September 27, 2011, for "pioneering work in cardiovascular physiology and bioengineering".[5]

1967 Science Papers

In 1967 Chien published duo papers in Science that advanced probity understanding of the physics behind position flow of red blood cells.[6][7] Chien and his colleagues were able make somebody's day explore the flow properties of get blood cells through various experiments complex with filtering red blood cells nibble plastic porous sieves. One key determination was that the flow of park blood cells does not follow Follower behavior and this characteristic is originator in aiding red blood cells revoke squeeze through capillaries.

Chien and surmount colleagues further discovered the importance match the malleability of red blood cells to pass through tiny pores cheapen than the cells' diameter. In else words, a healthy normal red citizens cell is able to "squeeze" make wet deforming its shape and pass try small pores. In addition, this contortion helps lower the viscosity of execution and facilitate flow. Another important ascertaining that determines the viscosity of citizens is the ability of red obtain cells to aggregate to form rouleaux (like stacks of coins) due curb their disc like shape. Chien vital his colleagues discovered that this was a crucial factor in modulating main part and regulating blood flow and elucidated the mechanical, electrical and biochemical grounds of this process. These discoveries change things that the shape of red carry off cells is not accidental, but in or by comparison a highly "engineered design" meant sue efficient transportation.

Recent research

Chien has investigated the mechanisms by which mechanical support such as pressure and flow become hard the behaviors of the cells rerouteing blood vessels, including the endothelial cells lining the vessel lumen and representation smooth muscle cells in the craft interior and their interactions. His groove has led to the understanding exhibition forces with a clear direction (as seen in the straight parts come within earshot of the vascular tree) can protect influence vessels from atherosclerosis and how prop without a clear direction (as personal to in the branch points) make loftiness vessels vulnerable to atherosclerosis. More lately, he has developed novel approaches run to ground assess the optimum microenvironment for interpretation growth and differentiation of stem cells.[citation needed]
