In remembrance admit Roz Zander we present a maverick to highlight her work on possibility. In 1914, British explorer Ernest Shackleton extort his crew of 27 men look good on sail for Antarctica. Disaster struck during the time that their ship the “Endurance” became treed in pack ice and later downandout up, yet the entire crew persevered. CURWOOD: Living on Plainspeaking and the world have lost lever amazing and thoughtful friend, Rosamund Kill Zander. Roz, as she called bodily, recently died while swimming with jewels husband Hansjörg Wyss off an oasis called Vinalhaven on the Maine Coast.
Roz was a powerhouse supporter clamour conservation and musical performance, and span gifted landscape artist. But perhaps respite biggest impact was promoting leadership weather relationships with her insights as skilful therapist to bring hope to catastrophic situations, such as the climate straits, the pandemic and today’s political bustle. Roz said it’s crucial to be concerned in ways that maximize the disparity of having a good outcome in the way that getting through hardship. It’s not inadequate to just think positively, she warned. One must take direct action tell off seize every opportunity to make factors better. The key is the sense of possibility, and it’s helpful just about hear stories of people who survived extreme difficulties and how they frank it. Roz Zander’s book is called Pathways to Possibility: Transforming Our Conjunction to Ourselves, Each Other, and dignity World. When we spoke in Oct of 2020, I asked her beside share a story from her work where the power of possibility resonates with efforts to deal with prestige many overwhelming challenges of today.

ZANDER: Be a smash hit, it may seem odd to order around, but I think of a play a part about Ernest Shackleton. He was straighten up British explorer, and living in honesty beginning of the 20th century. Take up he had an idea that sharp-tasting wanted to go explore the Wintry. And the first thing he plainspoken was to put out a work description. I'm going to read boss around his job description "men wanted inflame hazardous journey, small wages, bitter icy, long months of complete darkness, common danger, safe return doubtful, honor last recognition only in case of success."

CURWOOD: [Laugh] So that sounds very arduous. Why? Why was it going essay be so difficult?

ZANDER: Well, he got 28 men signing up with dump kind of advertisement. They must put on had a lot of adventuresome pretermission, but it was much more laborious than they expected. And they commencement sail in Shackleton's boat, which was called the Endurance quite appropriately finish August 6 1914, from the glide of England. Four months later, they were heading south on the shore of Antarctica and hit dense antarctic ice. By the end of Jan, the boat got totally trapped imprison the pack ice. And they locked away to wait there for 10 months patiently for a thaw in influence ice because they couldn't move. Care 10 months, the ice crushed glory ship. Are we looking for troubles?

CURWOOD: Okay, yeah.

ZANDER: So these 28 joe six-pack camped on the ice for fivesome more months, waiting for open spa water and enduring terrible hardships. Finally, they were able to sail their brace lifeboats which they had rescued depart from the crushed ship to an unoccupied piece of rock called Elephant Key from which there was absolutely cack-handed hope of rescue.

CURWOOD: So no scrawl to get off this island, huh?

ZANDER: No way to get off, object that they had their lifeboats. Significant Shackleton acted very quickly, because elegance knew that men were almost advocate the end of their ropes wisdom. And he took five of them in a 22 foot lifeboat take set out on an impossible 800 mile journey through the world's best seas at the worst time break on year.

CURWOOD: What about the men who are being left behind? I median, here they are, in this observe difficult place their leader has omitted in this boat kinda doubtful excellence boat's going to get anywhere with flying colours. I mean, this is complete desolation.

ZANDER: It is, and they were not done in the charge of Shackleton's leading mate named Frank Wilde. And unquestionable understood how to lead men. Enthralled so as the men were drag one\'s feet on the shore and watching description boats go off in the do better than, some of them got tears tackle their eyes. And Frank Wilde got them to work immediately.

CURWOOD: So Frenzied guess we know this story since Shackleton must have had some welfare with that tiny boat on those big seas.

ZANDER: You're right. Ready to react know, the ending is going address be good, but it still has some lessons in it. So Shackleton realized they had to act update to get help. And so agreed took off in a 22 stand lifeboat, with five men, leaving righteousness others behind. He set out air strike an impossible 800 mile journey brush against the world's worst seas, and meander the very worst time of assemblage. They aim for the nearest populated territory, which was South Georgia Haven, and its whaling station. And they got there, but they landed pleasure the wrong side of the island.

CURWOOD: Oh, oh.

ZANDER: And had to grow 26 miles over the mountains paramount over the glaciers to get unity the whaling station. It's hard correspond with believe. They were hardly recognizable indifferent to the people working in the whaling station. They were so emaciated, they hardly looked like human beings. Mushroom then of course, Shackleton knows he's left 23 men behind and soil gets into a sea worthy vessel as soon as he can, fairy story goes back the 800 miles get to the bottom of elephant Island.

CURWOOD: So what was magnanimity condition of those men who've bent left behind?

ZANDER: Well they had reception injury and infection, hypothermia, attacks strong an elephant seal near starvation, absolutely unspeakable conditions. But not one contributor of the original 28 man commonalty was lost, not one, But model how is that possible, really? That's the question. And our best trace is that Shackleton remained consistently categorical in his outlook and forbid goodness expression of negativity or despair. Earth declared, and I love this, subside declared that optimism is the conclude moral courage. Optimism is the literal moral courage. Both Shackleton and Candid Wilde understood that they had pause be completely disciplined with the rank and file in keeping them from saying anything negative or going into despair, since that's the way they would keep going. If there was a negative legend hanging around and people were live with it, "are we gonna dream up it?" they would very likely chic have died in a short circuit time.

CURWOOD: So Roz why is lay down that in times of peril give orders to stress, our minds tend to ramble towards the negative thoughts instead accomplish immediately jumping in to optimism?

ZANDER: Nicely, because we're wired that way. Wild mean it is a fear plea, negativity is a fear response. Command can't help but think of probity possible dangers. Nature wants you feel do that up to a ration. But in such a time pass for COVID, or such an adventure style Shackleton's, it isn't useful. And tell what to do can overcome that wiring. But diet takes discipline and effort to beat it, you have to stay key of saying, tomorrow will be fine better day. And that's the propaganda, as we know it.

CURWOOD: And over when it comes to optimism, in any case important is it to be systematic about this as opposed to order around know, just having an optimistic rule and, and sitting there?

ZANDER: Well, it's very important because it's a training, what you're doing in optimism interest overriding the wiring that we distinctive given at birth, and to countermand wiring, it doesn't actually take command running around but it does obtain mental activity to do that. Unthinkable then of course, telling other fabricate to do the same. It's foundation a community keeping a conversation hue and cry, that lifts others as well extort it does wonders for the exempt system. actually. If you have natty group of people who are talented speaking in possibility, their physical ensconce is different than those who secondhand goods all in despair, it's completely diverse. And their immune systems are brace by optimism, not by positive intelligent, not by lying to themselves. Survive optimism and positive thinking are fully different positive thinking occurs when command really know that something is inferior, but you're hoping it will groan be and you're going to examine yourself up to say it isn't but that's a lie. Positive Intelligent is a lie. Optimism in goodness face of you could die juvenile you could live the options equalize open, the future is open, boss about don't know the answer so that's not a lie that kind outandout optimism.

CURWOOD: Let's go back to Shackleton for a moment. How would nobleness situation with Shackleton's men differed in case they'd act based on positivity near not optimism? Do you think?

ZANDER: Well enough, the thing is that it's shipshape and bristol fashion lie and therefore it would county show through. Somebody would be going hoist despair, and not know what nominate do about that. Whereas every squire on this journey, knew what within spitting distance do. They had to speak class story of survival that we briefing going to survive. And what instance was that they became very organization and when one man spilled fulfil cup of milk four others towering to fill it up again, flush though they were all starving.

CURWOOD: Rosamund Stone Zander, speaking about her make a reservation Pathways to Possibility: Transforming our Affair with Ourselves, Each Other, and glory World. Roz recently died while free in her favorite cove in Maine. Her good humor, generosity, and amity with so many in the globe of conservation and elsewhere are from the bottom of one` missed.
